An innovative example of exceptional internet marketing use is the unique internet-based business model developed by Cape Town-based singer/songwriter, Verity.
According to the latest findings from The Face of the Web report, the expansion and depth of Internet use is at a level that not has not been seen before.
Dubbed The Lucky Packet Project, Verity's initiative is living proof of this statement. The project rests on the concept of pre-selling her album on www.iamverity.com to 5 000 fans or corporate sponsors on a trust basis, before she records it.
Verity has interested parties in the local and international music industry watching her progress with a model that breaks the paradigm of the major record labels, but still launches her career, gives money to charity, involves fans and empowers other local artists.
She will be giving 10.6% of each sale to two charities. Live Your Dreams, which helps other artists to achieve their dreams and POWA (People Opposing Women's Abuse), to assist in raising awareness of the abuse of women in South Africa.
In support of her project and her innovation around using internet marketing as a medium - Stonewall+ Digital Marketing has just bought 40 of her "yet to be" CDs. At the recent Khuza awards, CEO of Stonewall+, Ben Wagner spoke about the role of digital marketing for today's brands and how marketers should take advantage of new digital mediums to reach their consumers.
Says Wagner: "The internet is steadily emerging as an incredible channel both internationally and locally, and Stonewall+ as one of the major players in this industry is committed to showing support for initiatives of this nature. One of our primary clients is 5FM music and we can quickly appreciate the challenges that young entrepreneurs have in reaching critical success in launching their careers within the music industry."
Says Verity: "The Lucky Packet Project has worked really well so far, to date I have sold nearly 700 copies of a CD that isn't there, which proves that the people buying believe in the concept and are willing to take a risk in creating my album with me. Now as I am launching a PR and strategic marketing campaign the site will see a lot more traffic and sales."
And Stonewall+ sees a bright future for this type of innovation in South Africa: "We are putting our money where our mouth is by supporting this project," says Wagner. "We will be giving these 'yet to be' CD's to our clients as a token of the belief we have in the power of the internet and digital marketing and we are urging them and other companies to show their support for this innovative project by also buying CD's at www.iamverity.com."
Verity's enterprising initiative also has global echoes.
Singer-songwriter Sandi Thom is a self-made Internet superstar. Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair), Thom's quirky single, shot to the top of the charts in the UK at the beginning of June. Her rise is already the stuff of music industry myths. Thom, 24, from Macduff, Banffshire, was awarded a million-pound deal with RCA/SonyBMG after broadcasting Internet concerts from her flat in London.
Audiences rose from 70 to an estimated 70,000 people during the 21 Nights From Tooting tour and included a top executive from RCA/SonyBMG, who signed Thom for a five-album deal.
