MTN sponsors Rhodes journ scholarships

MTN's newly announced partnership with the Rhodes University School of Journalism and Media Studies will cover more than 100 scholarships for short courses in media management and leadership, and 20 bursaries for fulltime one-year study, over the next five years.

MTN scholarships for media leadership and management, in two categories, are aimed at assisting skills development in the industry. The awards will enable working journalists to benefit from courses run by the Sol Plaatje Institute for Media Leadership, a project of Rhodes University's School of Journalism and Media Studies. Rhodes has produced over 3000 graduates over the last 36 years and many media personalities and journalists are products of the school.

20 promising candidates

The MTN scholarships programme will give 20 promising candidates access to the in-depth experience of a year's study for a post-graduate diploma and provide 100 working journalists with access to short courses that will help improve their role in South African media.

Says Tim Lowry, MTN South Africa MD and VP, Southern & East Africa, “As social commentators and important opinion makers, it is in our interest to support the South African media in their quest for responsible and accountable journalism. With mobile technology making the strides that it has, it is imperative that mobile communications play an integral part in the development of media. We are proud to partner with an institution like Rhodes University.”

As a top South African company and a leader in the mobile telecommunications industry, not just in South Africa, but also on the African continent, Asia and the Middle East, MTN features in the media – electronic and print.

Media plays essential role

MTN thus accepts and understands the essential role the media plays and the value of such a partnership, and shares the interest and concern of other organisations and media owners, not just about the content of reportage, but also quality and media viability.
