Sunday Times charged with theft
By: Simone Puterman

NEWSWATCH: IOL reports that last night, Tuesday, 14 August 2007, Cape Town Medi-Clinic laid a charge of theft against the Sunday Times at the Cape Town central police station, “claiming that Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang's medical records [had] disappeared from its secured archives... The records are at the centre of a Sunday Times report that alleged that Tshabalala-Msimang abused her position to demand alcohol be smuggled to her while she was at the hospital two years ago.”

Sunday Times editor Mondli Makhanya said he was not aware of the theft charges on Tuesday evening, and is denying that anything was stolen. For more, read here.

Parliament agrees to shortlisting

Meanwhile, Business Day reports that “[a]ll political parties represented on Parliament's communications committee have agreed to short list at least five of the 141 nominations for membership of the new board of the SABC”.

Twelve new board members need to be proposed, which, after endorsement by Parliament, has to be approved by President Thabo Mbeki.

Once shortlisted, interviewing of candidates will begin and it is hoped that the process will be finished by the end of September, enabling a handover period as the new board is due to start operating at the beginning of 2008. For more, click here.
