Mpuma Tourism, Parks body seeks new CEO
By: Tshwarelo eseng Mogakane

The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) is searching for a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to take over the helm.

Former CEO Solly Mosidi was given a R1.3 million golden handshake in January after serving less than a year of a five-year contract.

There has been a spate of resignations by other senior managers from the MTPA offices in Nelspruit.

Deputy CEO Segware Rapolai left in December 2007, saying the parastatal was fraught with corruption and intimidation.

He is now suing the MTPA for R6 million over the constructive dismissal.

The parastatal was formed in 2005 when the Mpumalanga Economic Empowerment Corporation (MEEC) and the Mpumalanga Tourism Authority (MTA) were merged.

General manager Abe Sibiya has been appointed as acting CEO while the parastatal finds the right person for the job.

On Wednesday, Thomas Msiza, spokesperson for the department of economic development and planning said all the MTPA's board members would attend a course on corporate governance to improve their skills, competency and performance.

He said a team of experts would also be appointed before the end of February to restructure the MTPA's organogram.

He said the team would also help the MTPA board put proper systems, policies and procedures in place and develop proper financial systems and control mechanisms.

The new CEO is expected to be a strategic leader with an understanding of government structures, a good background in tourism and conservation and five years' experience in organisational leadership.

The deadline for job applications for the CEO position is 22 February.
