Mobilista's survival kit for Loeries
By: Harry Trisos

The Loeries is an annual event that celebrates and recognises great advertising. Some do however claim that it is more about the drugs, sex and rock-and-roll… of marketing. For those intrepid souls who are trekking down to Margate for the weekend - here are a few tips on what to DO and what NOT TO DO with your cell phones this weekend.

Things you ought to DO:

  • Load your mobile with music. This is essential in case you attend a boring presentation in which event you can sneak some music on the quiet.

  • Download some new mobile games to play throughout the weekend. That is, if you intend to stay indoors and attend official functions only.

  • Change your voice mail. Especially if you intend on having a raucous rip-snorter of a weekend. Something like: “Hi, this is XY [insert your name], I am presently attending a presentation on the importance of media fragmentation on advertising at the Loeries. Please leave a message and I will do my best to call you back after I have completed my program”. [The latter part is very important as it gives you the leeway to call back the following day… just in case…]

  • Buy a new pre-paid SIM card on the way to Margate. See below for the reasons why.

  • Change your profile to “meeting” or “silent” for the weekend. This will greatly assist in missing important calls. When the call kicks into voice mail then the caller will feel re-assured that you are truly on official business but too busy to answer.

  • Use your phone camera to take pix of the conference venue and dignitaries. This will later prove that you were at the right place at the right time… just in case.

  • Finally, remember to swop back your new and old SIM cards as you leave Margate. See below for the reasons.

  • Change your voicemail and profile because you are back in business!

    What you should NOT DO:

  • Take out your mobile handset in public unless it is the latest cool model. There is no kudos in having last year's model.

  • Do not show anyone pix of your family, no matter how intoxicated you are or late the evening. It will prove that you are a crashing bore.

  • Do not MMS the video you have of your spouse or lover in the shower to anyone. It will be all over the Internet by the end of the weekend.

  • Do not, I repeat, NOT send a lewd or solicitous sms to anyone of the opposite sex on your regular SIM card. Whatever you say will be stored and used against you in future. [ See SIM card swop above].

  • Do not, never ever, enter into a sexual liaison with someone of the opposite sex or, come to think of it, even with someone of the same sex whilst your cell phone is switched on. Beware, there are location based services, linked to satellite imagery, that will simply blow you away. Take a look at http://www.track-your-partner.com/ if you have any doubts. Put in a cell phone number and see what happens. [Health warning: for adults only!]

  • Never take a video of a partner after a casual sexual acquaintance. Usually, for some inexplicable reason this also occurs in the shower. Saving such incriminating evidence on your phone will doubtless lead you to rue the day you took off for Margate when, in fact, the Loeries had nothing whatsoever to do with your overactive libido.

  • Conversely, never allow anyone to take a pic or video of you in a similar position as set out above. A possible exception is if it is the CEO and you foresee the possibility of using it for leverage after the Loeries.

  • Do not keep your phone in your top pocket whilst drinking. It is bound to land up in the toilet bowl later in the evening.

Finally, have a gr8 time. C u get bak safe. Enjoy the coffee and remember … u read it on Bizcom 1st. ? xxx
