Nedbank employees put much-needed roofs over families' heads
Issued by: Kaelo Worldwide Media

Betty Mataboge is epileptic and diabetic. She and her family of eleven live in a tiny shack in Pilanesburg. Although the family is on a government social grant, this does not provide enough for the family's needs.

Betty tries to make ends meet by selling vetkoeks to the local community. This meagre income helps her to care for the children of her three sisters who have died.

There are many families just like Betty's but fortunately for Betty and nine other families in her community, Sun City and the Nedbank Foundation are changing the lives of ten families by providing roofs over their heads. Initiated in 2005 by Sun City, the Sun City/Nedbank Housing Initiative assists young families, who have lost their parents to the scourge of HIV/AIDS, by encouraging Nedbank employees to volunteer their assistance.

On Monday 20 October, Kaelo - Stories of Hope will showcase how Nedbank employees are helping to uplift the lives of ten families in the Lerome Village, Pilanesburg. The employees will be getting their hands dirty, building houses, and planting sustainable vegetable gardens for the families. Watch as the story of Betty's life unfolds, and how her new house has transformed her life, thanks to the commitment of Nedbank and its employees.

"This Corporate Social Investment project falls under community development, which is one of the Nedbank Foundation's focus areas. HIV/AIDS is also a strong focus and this is a tangible way to support families that are impacted by this disease,” says Reabetswe Motsepe, CEO of the Nedbank Foundation. “By getting the Nedbank employees involved in this project, not only does it make the employees aware of what Corporate Social Investment (CSI) work we get involved in, but it also shows that there is greater satisfaction in actively helping rather than just the donation of money.”

“Kaelo - Stories of Hope highlights unsung heroes and shows what can be achieved when companies, communities and individuals work together for a brighter future," says Sandile Koza, Managing Director of Kaelo Worldwide Media. “The Kaelo campaign can demonstrate real success through engaging viewers and encouraging action and partnerships, even instigating further funding and support for projects as a result of the knowledge and awareness people gain from seeing the stories. We believe that everyone has a role to play in driving change and development in this country, and we hope the stories inspire people to make a difference. Don't miss it.”
