Sondag gives power to the people and becomes their paper
Issued by: Sondag

Willem Pretorius, the editor of Sondag, is adding more value for readers, after heeding requests from the newspaper's latest readers' poll.

Opening the door to a possible flood of criticism, Sondag took the plunge and asked readers what they wanted and what they enjoyed about the newspaper's current format.

Sondag's readers have spoken and we have listened. It is heart-warming to see the positive reaction elicited by our recent readers poll,” he says. “The responses made two things crystal clear. Our readers refer to the newspaper as ‘My Sondag' and besides a few minor tweaks, they love the paper the way it is,” Pretorius adds.

Every reader had the opportunity to become his or her own editor, deciding what should be left in and what should be removed or changed. “Some suggestions were extremely surprising, while others were an affirmation of where our thoughts and intentions were already headed,” he adds.

Readers said that Sondag had too many sections and sub-sections. The new Sondag therefore has only three unique parts. Readers want to win prizes and Sondag has kicked this off with a new crossword puzzle that has R2 000 prize money up for grabs. Readers added, “Sondag is sport. Please don't change anything in the sports section. You have the best rugby coverage, without skimping on other sport coverage.“

While the winning Lotto numbers have found their place in the publication, columnists like MC Botha and Deon Maas will air their personal views with no holds barred. On the other hand, Zelda's star sign predictions and Timmerman have been voted out, as has Sake news, economic forecasts and Sondag sepies.

Green issues have been added to the agenda as readers have indicated that they want to know more about their environment and nature. These articles have already been included and readers are invited to give Sondag suggestions of topics they would like to read about.

Sondag will continue to change with its readers and keep them in the know. You will soon hold the Sondag you asked for in your hands,“ Pretorius concludes.
