New ideas on show at Markex

A quiver-full of new marketing ideas and opportunities is anticipated at this year's Markex & World of Events. The show, which incorporates Business of Sport, takes place 10 - 12 June 2008 at Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

According to Lynn Chamier, exhibition director at Exhibitions for Africa (EFA), a division of Specialised Exhibitions, space at the show is almost sold out, and visitors can once again expect to be exposed to the latest and the best of what this conspicuously creative industry can produce.

Cape-based Flava Promotions will be showing off its skills in turning corporate and promotional clothing into a fashion statement. The multiple-award winning company has fused its considerable fashion experience, notably through its highly successful range in the trendy Young Designer Emporiums throughout the country, into a range of corporate clothing that is custom-designed for a wide range of discerning clients.

"We've sold almost 30 000 units since producing our 20-page, full-colour catalogue, which is an indication that we are meeting a need for corporate clothing ‘with attitude'," says director Dave Horne.

"It will be our first time at Markex. We decided to exhibit after another exhibitor told us how many sales he had made after launching a new product at Markex last year.

"Markex will also give us an opportunity to have our target market come to us, rather than having to cold-call prospective customers," he adds.

New technology launch

Another newcomer, Matco, will be launching a new technology in South Africa that will enable the printing of high digital resolution branding onto doormats for small to very large companies. Visitors will be able to see first-hand what can be achieved with the technology - currently unique to Matco - at Markex.

Also launching - and adding to the interactive experience of Markex - is new company Grind Mobile Coffee Bar. MD Vernon le Roux says the company will address the growing "coffee culture" in South Africa, combining good quality coffee with a "vibey" venue to bring people together.

"We will be marketing to event companies and to business at large for all kinds of corporate functions. Grind can even be used as the registration point for events."

He adds, "Markex is a very good launching platform for our product, and will provide enough of the right people to start the ‘word of mouth' process."

The first multi-store gift card in South Africa will also be shown at Markex. Accor Services, a division of the Accor Group and a leading global issuer of service vouchers, describes the card, called Ticket Compliments, as the ideal reward, gift or incentive for someone deserving.

Account manager Gary Bloxham says: "Ticket Compliments is redeemable at a nationwide network of more than 2500 stores and outlets, from top retail brands to travel and leisure partners, as well as exclusive stores, making this more than a shopping experience."

Adding sweetness

Looking forward to being at Markex for the first time - and adding sweetness to the event - is Cartoon Candy. Staci Turnbull, special projects manager, says "I've visited Markex and have seen how it is a great vehicle for putting personalised gifts on view.

"I was impressed by the great vibe and huge amount of feedback that happens there. We're really looking forward to it."

The company specialises in personalised packaging of a range of sweets - including its famous Turnbull's Butterscotch, used in numerous large chain restaurants - lollipops and more.

Markex (Cape) will take place 19 - 21 August at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. For more information, go to www.markex.co.za.
